Free Annual Credit Reports
By law, you are entitled to one free credit report a year from each of the three major credit-reporting agencies: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. I strongly recommend monitoring your credit history throughout the year by ordering one report from a different reporting agency every four months. Write the dates on your yearly calendar or planner so that you don't forget when to request them. Transfer the dates whenever you get a new calendar or planner. Look at each report carefully and take the time to verify that every item listed there belongs to you and the information reported is accurate. Report any problems immediately.

"Green" (Environmentally Friendly) Resources
The truth is that everything single thing we do every day has an impact on the planet for good or bad, but making simple choices can lead to meaningful, environmentally friendly results. Here are some ways to help you embrace a greener, environmentally responsible lifestyle.
CLOTHING & TEXTILE RECYCLING
New Yorkers throw away over 193,000 tons of reusable and recyclable textiles every year, despite the fact that textiles are 100% recyclable. This represents almost 6% of NYC’s residential waste and costs the City tens of millions of dollars. To help combat this yearly waste, the Council on the Environment of New York City (CENYC) collects used textile materials for recycling, reducing NYC’s waste disposal costs. Materials are sorted into different grades including usable/non-usable, cotton scrap, cotton blend scrap and synthetics. These commodities are then sold for reuse or to recycling markets that turn materials into wiping rags, fiber for car seats and insulation.
Clear your closets and bring your unwanted textile materials (clean clothing, hats, coats, jackets, shoes, boots, handbags, belts, towels, bedding and linens) so they can be reused or recycled.
Brooklyn:
- Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket: Saturdays, 8AM-4PM
(N.W. Entrance to Prospect Park)
Manhattan:
- 97th Street Greenmarket: Fridays 8AM-2PM (97th St. & Columbus Ave.)
- Tompkins Square Greenmarket: Sundays, 8AM-4PM
(East 7th St. & Ave. A)
- Union Square Greenmarket: Mondays & Saturdays, 8AM-6PM
If you are unable to attend the weekly collections, contact Wearable Collections at 646-515-4387 or info@wearablecollections.com to see if you are eligible for a home pick up. Better yet, visit WearableCollections.com to find out how to set up a textile recycling program in your apartment building!
E-WASTE
The Lower East Side Ecology Center's electronic waste recycling program is a unique and innovative program allowing residents to dispose of working and non-working electronics in an environmentally responsible way. Residents can bring unwanted electronics to their e-waste collection events that take place in neighborhoods throughout the city.
The 4th Bin picks up electronic waste from local businesses and residents. Their door-to-door e-waste recycling solution is convenient, simple and inexpensive.
GENTLY USED GOODS
NYC Stuff Exchange is a quick and simple way for NYC residents to search for places in their neighborhood and throughout the city where they can donate, sell, buy, rent or repair different types of gently used goods. The goal of the NYC Stuff Exchange is to help lessen the City’s waste by encouraging the reuse of materials that might otherwise be discarded as trash
Hoarding

Manhattan Consignment Shops
Consignment shops split the proceeds of an item sold with the person who brought it in, giving real incentive to keep emptying out those closets. National Do Not Call Registry
The National Do Not Call Registry gives you a choice about whether to receive telemarketing calls at home. You can register your home and/or personal cell phone for free. The registry only applies to residential lines, not to business lines.
Most telemarketers should not call your number once it has been on the registry for 31 days. If they do, you can file a complaint at the Do Not Call Registry website listed below. The Registry does not limit calls by political or religious organizations; charities; telephone surveyors; companies that have a prior business relationship with the consumer, unless the company is specifically asked not to call; companies that have gotten the consumer's written permission to call, unless the company is subsequently asked not to call and telemarketers who wish to arrange for a face-to-face meeting before concluding a sales transaction.

MEDICINES & MEDICAL SUPPLIES
The Starfish Project, located at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center, collects the unused portions of people’s antiretroviral medications (ARVs) to support people who are HIV-positive in Nigeria. Teams of clinicians in New York collaborate with Nigerian clinicians to care for people with HIV and to build the capacity of local clinics to provide comprehensive HIV care. While the prices of ARVs have certainly dropped, they remain far out of reach for most of the world’s population living with the virus. In the meantime, your leftovers are their lifeline. The Starfish Project pays for all shipping costs from you to their collection depot in New York.
They collect all antiretroviral (ARV) medications, including Protease Inhibitors (PIs), Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors (NRTIs) and Non-Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors (NNRTIs). Please note that they DO NOT accept refrigerated medications or oral solutions. They also collect other medications that can be used to treat opportunistic infections, such as:
- Antifungals/Antimycotics (such as Fluconazole, Mycelex, Sporanox)
- Antivirals (such as Acyclovir, Famciclovir, Valacyclovir)
- Antibiotics (such as Ciprofloxacin, Amoxicillin, Metronidazole)
- TB Drugs (such as Rifampin)
- Others: Bactrim, Dapsone, Sulfadiazine, Pyrimethamine, etc.

Telephone Book Opt Out
YellowPagesGoesGreen.org is an organization working to educate consumers and promote the green movement to eliminate the unsolicited delivery of Yellow and White Pages books. Over 500 million of these directories are printed every year. That is nearly two books for every person in the country! These directories produce a staggering amount of waste, not only in terms of misused natural resources but also in filling of valuable landfill space. This movement should be similar to the National Do-Not-Call Registry that has stopped and/or decreased the number of unwanted solicitations telephone calls to consumers. The movement is not intended to stop the use of such directories, but to eliminate the unsolicited delivery of the books.
Unused or Unwanted Gift Cards/Gift Certificates
Sixteen percent of all gift card recipients never redeem the cards, some estimates say. Other estimates put the percentage of gift card "breakage" - the accounting term for cards that go unused - at 5 percent to 10 percent. That adds up to $8 billion this year for unredeemed, expired or lost gift cards.
If you're sitting with unwanted gift cards or gift certificates, you can sell or trade them online. You can even donate them online to charities to heal the sick, feed the poor or shelter the homeless. What this means is that like other unwanted gifts, gift cards are now very much returnable. Take the time to research online websites so you get the highest value you can for your gift card. Most of them also charge a small fee so pick one that has the lowest fee as well. Be sure to carefully read the users agreement on each site. Here are some options.
