The Importance of Recharging Your Batteries
This Summer

If you’re old enough to remember (or at least have ever heard!) Nat King Cole singing the song, “Those Lazy, Hazy, Crazy Days of Summer”, with its references to soda, pretzels, beer, the beach, singing songs of cheer and wishing that summer could always be here and you can relate, then you’re already way ahead of the game and undoubtedly know that summer is THE perfect time to slow down a bit, enjoy life and recharge your batteries.

Unfortunately, too many people today hold fast to the misguided notion that needing rest/relaxation is a sign of weakness. The reality is that nothing could be further from the truth. When you push yourself beyond your natural limits, you create a debt of strain in your body and mind that you eventually have to pay. By allowing yourself to completely relax, let go of frustration and eliminate fatigue, you’ll be able to focus much more easily and get more done in less time when it’s necessary, once again, for your thoughts to turn back to work, getting organized and being productive.

Summer is the perfect time to play board games; sit on a porch and chat with friends; get some pleasure reading in at the beach; watch the sun go down whenever you can; leave your BlackBerry at home and go for a long, leisurely walk, ignore your e-mail for a day (okay, a half a day!); turn off your cell phone for a few hours; go on a real vacation or spend an hour enjoying yourself instead of spending that hour worrying about getting organized or being productive!

This summer, experience the feeling of calm that comes from striking a sensible balance between striving to be organized and productive and letting go of all thoughts of being organized and productive. Slowing down is a conscious choice, and not always an easy one, but it leads to a greater appreciation for life, a greater level of happiness and a more focused and productive you.
