Dispelling (Another) One of the Big Myths About
Being Organized
One of the big organizing myths that I’ve written about before is that being organized equates with being neat. The truth is that you can be a neatnik and be disorganized and you can be a messie and be organized. It’s not as much about form as it is about function. Another big myth is that you get organized once and you’re done. Organized people know that getting organized is only half the battle. They understand that they MUST do periodic maintenance in order to stay organized and there simply is no getting around that fact. If you are not willing to do the necessary maintenance work, you will not be able to stay organized. Period.
If you look at the home page of my website, you will see that is says, “We can help you get organized and stay organized.” I tell every one of my clients that if they want to stay organized after we complete our work together they have two options. Option number one is that they do the ongoing maintenance of the systems and solutions we have determined would work best for them. Option number two is that they have someone, whether it’s me - via telephone consultations or follow-up visits - or anyone else who can handle it, help them do periodic maintenance. I tell potential clients that they should not waste their money hiring a Professional Organizer to help them get organized if they aren’t willing to devote the time or don’t have the patience, commitment and discipline necessary to stay organized. They’ll be wasting their money and will undoubtedly be frustrated, disappointed and discouraged when it falls apart, which it will without ongoing maintenance. When that happens, they’re likely to tell themselves that it’s impossible for them to be organized when nothing could be further from the truth.
Reducing stress, increasing productivity and saving time and money are some of the best motivators I know for getting and staying organized, but, like achieving anything worthwhile, effort is required. Hopefully, the sense of satisfaction, control and peace that you experience from the transformation around you will motivate you to maintain it. New skills and habits can be fragile and, sometimes, new systems need fine-tuning and old habits can be hard to break, but, after a while, being organized will feel completely natural to you and you’ll wonder how you ever lived any other way.
