Light Up Your Life (and Your Space!)

Sometimes the simplest things make the biggest difference. Take natural light and the right artificial lighting, for instance. They both have a dramatic effect
on a room's colors, ambiance and functionality and can turn any space in your home into a place where you want to spend time. Here are some tips to help you make the most of what you have.

TIP #1 – SHED SOME LIGHT ON IT: Clutter tends to accumulate in poorly lit areas, especially corners, so be sure to light them up. You’re much less apt to pile things in places that are highly visible.

TIP #2 – MAKE IT APPEALING & FUNCTIONAL: If there’s a space or room in your home that you don’t like or tend to avoid spending time in, ask yourself if better lighting would make it more appealing and functional. If all it has is general lighting, that’s usually not enough light to satisfy everyday needs. Add task lighting in work areas or areas that are used for a specific purpose. For instance, more light is required if you’re putting a puzzle together, sewing, reading a book, paying bills, working at a desk, etc. Add accent lighting to highlight an important piece of art or brighten a dark corner. With accent lights, you can accomplish a spectacular change for very little money and dramatically improve the “feel” of a room.

TIP #3 – THE RIGHT LIGHTING SAVES ENERGY: Spaces with good task lighting are more energy efficient because you can select focused light where you need it rather than illuminating the whole room.

TIP #4 – MIRROR, MIRROR: Mirrors are a tried-and-true way to open up space and reflect light and they almost always help a small room. Large mirrors can make a room visually double in size. In addition to mirrors, glass and metallic surfaces can help keep your space bright by bouncing light around the room.

TIP #5 – LIGHTEN UP: A cramped living room can be made to feel more spacious with light colored walls, so don't paint them a dark color. Save the dark paint for the entryway because painting it dark will accentuate the brightness of the living room even more.

TIP #6 – LIGHT IT UP: Any room will look LARGER if it's well lit, either by natural light and/or artificial lighting. Assess your space and add more lamps or install track lighting, if it seems too dark, dim or closed in.

TIP #7 – FREE UP FLOOR SPACE: If you live in a small space, consider wall-mounted lights to free up your valuable floor space. Fixtures on swing arms, adjustable pendant lights and sconces are all excellent options.

TIP #8 – LET THE SUN SHINE IN: Open up your window space to let in all the outdoor light possible. When the curtain rods extend beyond the window frames, the curtains allow in more light and draw the eye outward. To make the windows look taller hang shades and curtains from the ceiling. Windows are the eyes of the room and when you cover them up, you make a space look and feel smaller.
