Give the Gift of Organization This Mother’s Day
Candy and flowers are some of the traditional ways we honor our Moms on Mother's Day, but this year why not honor Mom with gifts that will help make her life a little easier.
If you’re buying a gift, consider what she’s been needing or wanting.Think about any of her daily activities, hobbies, habits or work that may benefit from organization. If she's got shoe boxes overflowing with family photographs, get her some nice photo boxes with index cards that allow her to catalog and easily view what the subject and date of the photos are. As an added bonus, offer to help her with the actual hands-on organizing. It's a great way to spend time together!
Think about giving her desk accessories that help her office area stay organized or an electronic device that simplifies her life. If she has business cards - or info written on little slips of paper - scattered everywhere, get her a business card file so she can corral important contact information all in one place with minimum effort. Hand-made, custom designed or decorative storage items that allow her to store the “stuff” that clutters up a space are always welcome.
If you're not sure exactly what she would like or needs, give her a gift certificate to a store, catalog or company where she can chose items that will help solve some of her organizing dilemmas. If she’s expressed genuine interest in getting organized, consider giving her a gift certificate for organizing services. She'll have more time and space for the things she loves and she'll have you to thank for it. (Note: it's best if the gift of Professional Organizing services is not a complete surprise, as this kind of service and the choice of which Organizer to work with are personal.)
If you're looking for non-monetary gifts, give her something that only you can give: your time. Get projects done that she's been waiting for you to complete. Or create your own voucher good for any project of her choosing. If her choice of a project is a large one, remember to be sensible in your approach; don't try to get it all done in a day. Spread the work out over multiple sessions so that neither of you burn out, yet progress is made. Enjoy your time together!
Surprise her by picking up your room or another part of the house if she's been asking you to. If it's been years since you lived at home, but you still have “stuff” there taking up space that she could use for other things, now is the perfect time to move it out. That includes the “stuff” in your old bedroom that keeps it frozen in time - nothing moved - like a shrine to your youth! Empty it out so mom can have that office, guest, exercise or hobby room she’s always wanted.
This Mother's Day, think creatively about gifts that will simplify and enrich her life and reduce her stress. And remember, no gift is too humble if it's thoughtful and heartfelt.
