General Organizing and Time Management Tips

TIP #1 - FINANCIAL AND LEGAL DOCUMENTS: If you’re uncertain about whether or not you can dispose of a piece of financial or legal paperwork, ask your accountant or attorney.

TIP #2 – PAPER: Don't let the fact that you have a printer encourage you to create extra paper - don't print out anything off of your computer unless you truly need a hard copy. That’s how the piles of paper and clutter begin.

TIP #3 – TOYS: If your kids are like many kids, they are overloaded with toys, games, etc. One way to solve the problem is by rotating them. Put some of them away for a few months then bring those back out and pack up some of the ones that are out.

TIP #4 – CALENDARS & PLANNERS: Use pencil when recording appointments and meetings that might change. Use pen when recording birthdays, anniversaries and other unchanging dates.

TIP #5 – CLUTTER: If you devote just 15 minutes each day to picking up your home and/or office, you will prevent clutter and piles from forming.

TIP #6 – MOVING DAY: Keep your cleaning supplies, broom, mop, vacuum cleaner, etc. handy so you can tidy up your old home on moving day.

TIP #7 – DRAFTS & FINAL COPIES: By printing drafts of reports and other documents on colored paper and the final copy in white, you will avoid mixing them up.

TIP #8 – TRAVEL: Assemble an emergency travel kit - snacks, drinks, wipes, clean underwear, etc. You’ll be glad you did if you end up getting stranded.

TIP #9 – DELEGATING: Once you delegate a job, let the person you’ve chosen for it handle it. Resist the temptation to step in and do the work yourself. You can’t do everything even if you think you can!

TIP #10 – BILLS: If you hate paying bills and sometimes forget to, incurring late fees or other charges, consider using an automated bill paying service through your financial institution.

TIP #11 – JIGSAW PUZZLES: If you or your kids have trouble keeping track of which pieces go to which puzzle, mark the backs of each piece with a colored dot. Use a different color for each puzzle.

TIP #12 – KITCHEN STORAGE: Keep items you only use occasionally – large platters, cake pans, etc. - in high or low cabinets. Keep items you only use once a year – Christmas dishes, Hanukkah menorahs, other seasonal items, etc. - in your most out of the way cabinets.

TIP #13 – GOAL SETTING: Do your goals inspire and excite you or do they make you feel overwhelmed, trapped or unhappy? If it’s the latter, they may not be the right goals for you.

TIP #14 – FURNITURE: When you’re shopping for furniture look for pieces that have built-in storage space. Think “functional” - shelves, drawers and cabinets - but keep in mind that functional doesn’t have to be boring. There are lots of choices out there. Keep looking until you find the combination of utility and style that best suits your practical needs and aesthetic taste.

TIP #15 – CLEAN UP: Keep extra trash bags in the bottom of all of your wastebaskets. That way, when it's time to remove the filled trash bag, you'll have a new one at hand
