Need Extra Storage Space? Try This!
In my work as a Professional Organizer, I get to see lots of different kinds of living spaces. Elegant, spacious, pre-war apartments on the Upper East Side; cozy, one bedroom, brownstone apartments in the West Village; lofts in Tribeca; studio apartments in Chelsea, duplex apartments on the Upper West Side; two bedroom apartments in mid-town and everything else imaginable. Part of what makes what I do so interesting is seeing how different people live and the storage challenges they face.
As you might expect, people living in small spaces typically don't have enough room for all their things. Interestingly, though, even people living in large spaces with ample closets and storage areas often seem to suffer from the same problem. It just seems to be human nature to expand to fill whatever available space we have! As a country that encourages and thrives on the consumption of consumer goods of every possible kind, it's all too easy to succumb to the temptations to acquire "stuff" and no surprise that many of us simply don't have enough space for all of it.
In the seemingly never ending quest for more storage space, there is one place in the home that is often overlooked and that's the space underneath your bed! If you have a full size bed or larger, you have an amazing 28 to 42 square feet of storage underneath it. There are a wide variety of containers made expressly for the purpose of storing out-of-season clothing and accessories, extra pillows, blankets and sheets, toys, memorabilia, small electronics, photographs, sports equipment, paperwork and many other items in that often overlooked space.
Some of you may already have beds that sit high off of the floor and can accommodate under-the-bed storage containers. If you don’t - or if you want your bed to be even higher than it already is - that can be remedied by using bed risers. When placed beneath each foot of your bed frame, bed risers can lift your bed an additional 5" - 7" off of the floor. Bed Bath & Beyond and The Container Store both sell a variety of bed risers in plastic, dark wood, light wood and stackable versions. Both stores also sell a variety of containers that are designed specifically for use under a bed.
So, if your closets, cabinets and bureaus are bursting, I encourage you to take advantage of this easy, practical and often overlooked area for extra storage. Happy organizing in your newly acquired space!
